My Disaster Prepping Moment

Hello and welcome to My name is Joe Medrose, and  as you may have guessed, I am a disaster prepper. Now, I am not an, “end of the world as we know it” ITEOTWAWKI prepper. But, I am a guy who takes preparing for real possible disasters very seriously.

I wasn’t always a disaster prepper. Like a lot of people involved with disaster prepping and ensuring family safety. It took a wake-up situation for me to realize that my family and I were completely unprepared should a major disaster occur. At the time of this writing that was almost 16 years ago.

It was September 11th 2001, which by coincidence was my birthday. I remember sitting in the living room watching cartoons with the kids that morning when I got the news. The Twin Towers were being attacked. Right away I knew this was an attack on our financial structure. We were at war!

The first thing I thought of was the price of gas going up, so I went to fill up. When I got there I realized I wasn’t the only one who figured this out. I figured there would be a line, but what I saw floored me. I was lucky enough to be one of the first ten cars to the pump. But, just as I was finishing people were beginning to panic. The line was continuing to grow and they all knew there wasn’t going to be enough for everyone.

Luckily the police showed up before a fight broke out, but as I sat there taking in the scene. I realized the most terrifying thing of my life… What if this is it?! What if this is the beginning of the big financial collapse all the big experts were talking about? I realized that my family and I had no provisions to last for such a calamity. I started to realize that we as a society take too much for granted.

When we think of what we want for supper. We say, “I’ll just go to the store”. But, what if the store is no longer there? Or even more likely to happen. What if the store is till there, but the prices are so high you almost have to take out a loan to feed your family? This is already happening with food companies changing their food containers in order to sell less food for the same price without you noticing.

It gets worse, much worse. In a major economic collapse of the U.S. everything will be harder to get. Fresh water for drinking and laundry, the soap you need for laundry, electricity will be sky high in prices, and food will be scarce. Lets face it folks. If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.

After a few years of prepping a stumbled upon this book entitled Plan and Prep: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse (not an affiliate link). I don’t mind telling you, even though I had been already studying prepping for a few years. This book opened my eyes to a lot.

That is why I started this site. To maybe help you beginning preppers out there not make the same mistakes I did and possibly get some ideas from you. I am an open minded guy who is willing to learn as well as teach. On this blog we will be talking about the disaster prepping techniques I use to protect myself and my family from disaster.

You will learn about off grid power techniques that won’t break the budget. How to have a year round garden indoors. What home defense weapons would be useful in a disaster situation,  and so much more. I hope you enjoy the site.
